The Government of Uganda has announced the expansion of a nationwide community tree-planting initiative aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and strengthening the country's response to climate change.
The program, launched in partnership with local governments, schools, and environmental organizations, seeks to plant more than 10 million trees over the next three years. Officials say the initiative will focus on areas affected by deforestation, soil erosion, and declining biodiversity.
According to the Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda continues to face increasing environmental challenges, including unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts in some regions, and floods in others. Experts warn that these climate-related impacts threaten agriculture, water resources, and livelihoods across the country.
Speaking during the launch event in Kampala, government representatives emphasized the importance of community participation in achieving national environmental goals.
"Tree planting is not only about restoring forests; it is about protecting our future, improving livelihoods, and building resilience against climate change," one official said.
Local communities are expected to receive seedlings, technical training, and support to ensure the survival of planted trees. Schools will also participate through environmental clubs and awareness campaigns aimed at promoting sustainable practices among young people.
Environmental advocates have welcomed the initiative but stress that long-term success will depend on consistent monitoring, enforcement against illegal logging, and continued public engagement.
As Uganda works toward its climate commitments, stakeholders hope that large-scale restoration efforts will contribute to cleaner air, improved soil health, and greater resilience for communities facing environmental pressures.
