The Government of Uganda has launched a nationwide digital skills initiative aimed at empowering young people with practical technology knowledge and improving their chances of securing employment in the modern economy.
The program, unveiled in Kampala on Wednesday, seeks to provide training in areas such as computer literacy, web development, cybersecurity, digital marketing, graphic design, and entrepreneurship.
Officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to address youth unemployment while preparing the country's workforce for the growing digital economy. Thousands of young people from different regions are expected to benefit from the first phase of the project.
Speaking during the launch, government representatives emphasized the importance of technology in driving economic growth and innovation. They encouraged young Ugandans to take advantage of the opportunities provided through the program.
Training centers will be established in several districts, while online learning platforms will be used to reach participants in remote areas. The initiative will also partner with private-sector organizations to offer mentorship, internships, and career guidance.
Education experts have welcomed the move, noting that digital skills are increasingly becoming essential across many industries. They argue that investing in technology education can help bridge the gap between academic qualifications and labor market demands.
Participants who successfully complete the training will receive certificates and may qualify for additional support to start digital businesses or pursue advanced studies in technology-related fields.
